Tim O'Reilly: The Software Paradigm Shift (IT Conversation)

Interesting piece Tim O'Reilly: The Software Paradigm Shift (IT Conversation) - the operating system no longer matters. I agree this is true, but what does matter?

We are on the cusp of change, but we are not there yet. The path is clear around building services and making them available for use rather than shipping software, with all the attendant baggage. The missing piece the we have still not figured out is how to weave together solutions from disparate services. Once we do that the paradigm shift will happen and the OS will be irrelevant - maybe the network will become the OS.
